It was my second morning in Siem Reap. I’d been dreaming about seeing Angkor Wat for years.

Excited and a little jetlagged, I threw on shorts and a tank top, grabbed my camera, and hopped in a tuk-tuk.

At the gate, the guard kindly pointed out I couldn't enter the temple dressed like that.

I stood there, embarrassed and disappointed—until another traveler offered me her spare sarong.

That colorful piece of fabric saved my day.

Not only did I get to explore the temples with ease, but I also learned something important: respecting local customs opens doors—literally.

Since then, my sarong comes with me everywhere in Cambodia. It’s a scarf, beach towel, and temple-visit essential all in one.

Packing smart isn’t just about gear. It’s about understanding the culture and staying open to connection.

So if you’re heading to Cambodia: pack light, dress modestly at temples, and maybe, just maybe—bring an extra sarong. You never know who might need a hand.
